Since the family matriarch now collects a paycheck from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, she signed us up for a 3-hour volunteer shift Saturday morning at Grafton Lakes State Park, about 25 miles from our house, nearly on the VT border. The volunteer coordinator is as cool as Merrilly Yours and has a blogger account as well! You can read her poor grammar here. We were assigned the blueberry patch and the work was simple, if tiring. A park worker with a chainsaw had gone through and pruned the patch and it was our job to drag all the sticks and brambles to the wood chipper. Ear plugs were provided as were some breakfast snacks that I wouldn't have thought twice about consuming in early Nov. 2020 -- brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tarts! Don't worry, I had a banana instead. After the manual labor, we drove home through Troy and ate lunch at a place called Nighthawks. It was our first experience with QR-code activated menus and it definitely felt kind of weird eating indoors and maskless, but all agreed the grass-fed real and vegan burgers and falafel salad were excellent.
