1000 Islands

I drove up Friday afternoon to what we called "the north" decades before Game of Thrones was a hit. Enjoyed a ham steak, roasted vegetables, and a few hours of conversation with the folks, went to bed, and woke up Saturday for the 40-minute drive to Clayton, N.Y., a St. Lawrence River town where PEF union members from "the north" gathered at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel to learn the latest tips and tricks about advocating for themselves and making management adhere to their collective bargaining agreement. I had to man a table and give a short presentation about the mobile app my team helped create, and was rewarded with a two-hour tour of the Thousand Islands aboard an Uncle Sam boat out of Alexandria Bay. It was a tad chilly, but I took photos of some of those multi-million dollar second "pied-à-terre" homes that Gov. Hochul would like to increase taxes on by 5%, and then endured a meal of Casear salad, rubber chicken, and asparagus. Home in time to run six miles with Greta on Sunday, spend too much money at the Schenectady Farmer's Market, and mow the lawn. Now it's two NBA Game 7s, bed, and another week. Greta flies to D.C. on Tuesday to ring in her 21st with her friends. Maybe she'll honor us with a slightly tipsy blog post on Cinco de Mayo. Or maybe not. Lincoln comes home next Friday and both chambers of my heart will be full.

Boldt Castle, never completed at the turn of the century after George Boldt's wife died, vandalized for decades while another rich guy owned it but didn't have enough resources to do anything with it, sold for $1 to the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority in 1977 and slowly restored to its intended Gilded Age grandeur.

The longest boat I'd ever seen; many jokes from our boat about whether we could jump, swim, and claim asylum in international waters.

Boldt Castle yacht house.

Coolest architecture with those stone support columns.

Coolest landscaping with all those rocks.

For sale! Over-under $2.5 million?

When your boat house is equivalent to your living quarters, you've made it.
