Survivor, S46 — CBS | The granddaddy of reality shows once again didn’t disappoint. Excellent casting this season and with all episodes 90 minutes long, viewers really got to see more of the plotting and scheming. We’ll keep watching each year until host Jeff Probst suffers a fatal jellyfish sting or has a heart attack screaming, “That’s how you do it on ‘Survivor!’”
The Voice, S25 — NBC | I’m including this one, even though I didn’t really watch the semis or finals! The singer Carey voted for (Nathan) didn’t win, alas, but Reba McEntire was the winning judge, so that was nice. I still enjoy the blind auditions the best.
Loot, S2 — Apple TV | Maya Rudolph returns for another season as the separated spouse of a billionaire tech mogul balancing her rampant consumerism with her charitable heart. A few laughs, but really, the Rudolphs of the world must be happy there are so many streaming services that they can get highly compensated for shows like this.
Jeopardy! Masters — ABC | Long live the new Quiz Queen Victoria!
(Belated spoiler alert) James Holtzhauer seemed OK with his third-place
fate, but there’s no doubt he’s changed the game — everybody goes “all
in” on every daily double these days.
The Boys in the Boat — Amazon Prime | Enjoyed this George Clooney-helmed true life story about the men’s crew team from the University of Washington that shocked the world at the 1936 Olympics. Stars a bunch of actors you think you’ve seen somewhere before.
Wedding Crashers — DVD | Continuing our tradition of watching inappropriate movies with the grandparents at South Lake, we enjoyed this raunchy rom-com from 2005. I’d forgotten how long it was, but there were plenty of laughs. Owen Wilson’s nose never prevented him from making funny movies with Vince Vaughan and others.
Supercell — Hulu | Proof that not every streaming algorithm works, I slogged through this 90-minute Alec Baldwin/Skeet Ulrich film about a son trying to let go of his late storm-chasing father. Might have missed the middle during a short nap, but can attest that the portion I did have my eyes open for was absolute dreck. The only positive? Seeing Anne Heche again.
Anyone But You — Netflix | The King of Streamers banged out another formulaic rom-com, but the lead actors are fine to look at and some of the jokes are actually funny. Apparently it’s a modern interpretation of “Much Ado About Nothing,” but that went over this English Literature major’s head. Still, not an unpleasant way to spend 1:42.
Eruption by Michael Crichton and James Patterson | This will likely be one of the bestselling books of the summer no matter what I say here, but other than the fact that the pages practically turn themselves, it was pretty formulaic. Let’s hear it for Dr. John MacGregor, (“Call me Mac”) and probably soon-to-be-played by Chris Pratt, for practically jumping inside a volcano and saving the big island of Hawai’i along with the rest of the human race. | My AP review.

What timing! We just watched "Anyone But You" last night. Did you find Owen Wilson's nose distracting? I find the whole of him to be less than entertaining.
ReplyDeleteHe does a good job of not making it only about his nose. But with all his money, i don't understand why he doesn't have a perfectly shaped one.
