Our honored senior

With graduation just 19 days away, Greta can see the finish line of her high school career. The month of May and the first couple days of June were devoted to recognizing the Class of 2023 for their various accomplishments. Last night were the Senior Awards, where first she accepted something called the Hudson River Bank and Trust Company Citizenship Award for "demonstrating good citizenship and community involvement." Her prize was $125. Then it was the Dr. John Youngblood Memorial Book Award for "outstanding achievement and interest in English." Her award was Michelle Obama's book "The Light We Carry," which she read six months ago. She rounded out the evening with two medals she gets to wear at graduation, the Niskayuna Medal of Academic Excellence, which goes to all students with GPAs in the top 5% of the class, and the Niskayuna Medal of Excellence, which goes to most seniors with a GPA of 90 or higher, plus some others who the committee deems worthy for some other reason. Last month, specific departments honored students with their own ceremonies. I think Greta received a certificate from every class except lunch, which she didn't even have on her schedule half the year anyway. Needless to say, we're all very proud at 2148 Morrow Ave.
