It's the closest Vermont-y town to us, so we drove over last Sunday to peep the leaves, see the sights and enjoy a fabulous maple latte, iced for me, hot for C. We also intended to hike in the woods, but since we didn't have Yeager with us, the afternoon kind of just dissipated on us. After lunch at South Street Cafe -- where a flutist was in the lunchtime band! -- we checked out something called the Bennington Battle Monument. It's a mini version of Washington's obelisk, marking a Revolutionary War skirmish that actually occurred 10 miles away in 1777. If you're curious why we were still fighting in 1777 when your high school history lessons have the year 1776 stuck in your head as a marker for American independence, read all about it on Wikipedia, like I did.
The American Revolution did not end until 1783, so it makes sense that they were fighting in 1777. The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776 which is why people think that is when we achieved our independence but it actually wasn't until later.
