The first significant almost-winter snowfall in New York's Capital Region dropped overnight. Less than an inch on the ground, but it's more than a dusting! When it snowed overnight growing up, Dad would always lead Sara and me to the window in the morning and say with a flourish, "The Big Surprise!" (Note for the historical record: Dad credits Mom with coming up with the idea, but I do remember Dad saying it more often. Maybe it was one of those things Moms do to make their Dads beloved by their children?) Don't know when it started, but it has endured. So I try to keep it going with Greta and Lincoln. I wonder what other silly family phrases or habits they'll remember 35 years from now? Lincoln will probably just remember that even when it snowed he never wore a jacket to school.
