A Capitol Fourth

Greta and I drove the 6.5 hours down to DC on July 3 in advance of her National Leadership Conference summer session that begins July 5 at Georgetown. Arrived mid-afternoon and hopped on the bikes at Aunt Kathy’s condo in Arlington. Zipped down to Key Bridge where we caught the Mt Vernon trail along the Potomac waterfront on the VA side.

I regaled Greta with stories of dusk bike commutes from NBC News to Alexandria, rushing to make it home in time to see her with her eyes open. She confesses to remembering none of her time here, but said outright that if she gets into Georgetown or American, she will likely call this part of the world home for four years. We biked across Memorial Bridge, took the requisite photo with Honest Abe, then followed M St through the Georgetown neighborhood (stopping for Indian food on the sidewalk) before crossing Key Bridge back to AK’s condo.

So far on this Independence Day, we watched the Nationals lose to the Miami Marlins, 3-2 in 10, hanging out with my college roommate Kipp and his family. He’s in town for a couple weeks of training with USAID before his next assignment in Mexico City. We walked the DC wharf part of the way home before hopping the Metro back to Ballston. Now we’re resting before dinner and the big fireworks show. We hope to find a few square feet on the grounds of Iwo Jima, which is about a mile from AK’s.

The Titanic Memorial, believe it or not. Erected by “the women of America” (huh?) to honor the brave men who died on board.

The most chic Nats fan.

Our view from Section 407.
