"...to promote accessibility to public facilities in the Town of Niskayuna for pedestrians and ensure their safety, Greta Merrill, a freshman at Niskayuna High School, proposed the installation of crosswalks between certain public facilities; and
WHEREAS, Greta Merrill collected over 100 signatures to confirm that residents supported her initiative and subsequently contacted the Town Supervisor to propose ways in which the Town could improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, specifically in the Town Center Overlay District; and
WHEREAS, Greta Merrill drafted a proposed resolution to "Improve the Pedestrian Safety and Accessibility to Public Facilities" that recommended amendments to Chapter 185 of the code of the Town of Niskayuna, which pertains to Streets and Sidewalks; and
WHEREAS, Greta Merrill presented the proposed resolution to the Planning Board and the Town Board during privilege of the floor, met with the Deputy Town Attorney on several occasions to discuss the proposed resolution, as well as the Town Planner; and
WHEREAS, Greta Merrill's proposal was presented to the Transportation and Public Facilities Committee and the Superintendent of Highways; and
WHEREAS, as a result of Greta Merrill's steadfast advocacy for improving pedestrian accessibility between public facilities, the Superintendent of Highways installed crosswalks between the Town Hall and the Niskayuna Library.
NOW THEREFORE, be it
RESOLVED, that this Town Board, on behalf of the residents of the Town of Niskayuna, does hereby recognize and thank Greta Merrill for her efforts to advance pedestrian safety in the Town of Niskayuna by making public facilities more accessible through the installation of crosswalks; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Clerk on behalf of this Town Board be, and she hereby is, authorized and directed to present Greta Merrill with a copy of this resolution.
