Big day for little kid

Lincoln is much taller than Greta now, but she'll forever be big kid and he'll be little kid, as in the classic nonsense rhyme I started chanting some time after Lincoln showed up in 2007 -- "big kid, little kid, all around the kid kids."

But this post is about Lincoln. He had a classic "All-American High School" day yesterday. Went to school, per usual, then hopped on a bus to Colonie for the New York State Section II Track & Field Championships. Had a great pole vault warm-up and then stalled in the competition, clearing only 9', a foot lower than his personal best of 10'. BUT he finished early enough to hop in my car and high-tail it back to the high school for the final Symphonic Band performance of his life. Carey texted with the conductor and they were able to delay their walk on the stage until Lincoln arrived just minutes before their opening number. Mr. Hughes then felt obligated to point out Lincoln's red track tee among all the concert black -- "Lincoln Merrill, fresh from Sectionals!" -- when he asked the seniors to stand up and be recognized. Carey and I both felt a surge of pride.

Here's a video of his vault attempts set to the songs of the NHS Symphonic Band.
