It's not quite the same without a kid in the race, but it was good exercise and I did an adequate job "sweeping" the 8th grade girls around the 3-mile course at Walnut Mountain in the Catskills of Liberty, N.Y., on Sunday. Not sure I'll coach for more than a year, but I'm committed for this season at least. I do enjoy the practice rides on Monday and Wednesday evenings. This is me at the starting line -- the girls behind me are 6th & 7th graders. I was in charge of five 8th graders who were all lined up in front of me. More than half those 6th & 7th graders zoomed past me in mile 1, though!
