I'm neither in a different hemisphere nor in the current seat of all Evil Power, but life goes on in frigid Niskayuna. Last Friday I enjoyed a Led Zeppelin tribute band going by the name of this post's title with a few local friends. They've been working the circuit for well over a decade, entertaining aging music fans like myself (and much, much older by the looks of the crowd!) with all the hits. As the Robert Plant wanna-be said at one point in an aside, "We really try to not be impersonators. We just love this music. And so while Led Zeppelin was four men in a band, you'll notice we sometimes have as many as eight on stage in order to approximate the layers of sound and post-production that went into a Zeppelin record." It really was a cool show. Probably 25 songs in all and there was just one I didn't recognize. They closed with "Stairway to Heaven," of course. It all took me back to discovering the band on cassette tapes played on Ian Crowley's boombox, and records from Bob Babcock's brothers' collection when they weren't around to yell at us for touching their electronics.
The drummer was amazing and delivered a near rhythmic replica of rock and roll's greatest drum solo ever, "Moby Dick." Go ahead -- search it up!
