Carey Ann Mathews Merrill is 47 years old, hair a deep auburn this spring. Really out of my league, looks-wise. Happiest with a cup of coffee and her New York State headlines on her BlackBerry on a weekend morning, or walking Yeager with yours truly before the town is awake. At work, she complains a lot about office politics, but insists she doesn't care who takes credit as long as the taxpayers benefit. She's adopted a new church, the Eastern Parkway United Methodist, only a few miles from home. I didn't much care for the pancake breakfast a couple weeks ago, but the fish fry this Friday was quite good. Too much cinnamon in the baked beans, but every other dish was excellent. Incredible dill in the potato salad. For a little more than a year she's been on the Environment & Culture Advisory Committee at Niskayuna Central School, working to make our district more diverse. She's also the de facto leader of Girl Scout Troop 2351 -- well, in cahoots with Trudy, who last had Girl Scout-aged kids in 1980-something. She's reading Michelle Obama's autobiography, Becoming, probably her first pleasure book since 2012. She does a lot of laundry and lets me know when she's done it and just how much. This weekend I caught her raking the flower beds.
