Now batting, No. 5, Lincoln Merrill, No. 5...
Note the focus on where the ball was, not where it's going ... kind of like golfers always being told to keep their head down after the swing. The Kid was 2-2 for a pair of singles. And unlike some others, he ran directly to first base, perhaps persuaded by his mother.
While alone on second base, he apparently sings to himself, but I'm not sure what tune.
All in all, a successful opening day. From t-ballers to Babe Ruth leaguers, hundreds of kids paraded down Valley Street to the Maplewood fields, where a band of teenagers from a local music teaching business sang covers like "Layla" and "Centerfield." The players ringed the full-dirt diamond and listened to the music and the speeches from the mayors.
