It's quaint, for now. The soft glow of reading by flash- and candlelight, waking up when sun rays filter through the windows, and fellowship with friends who graciously offer up their electricity and Internet. But there's a quiet desperation you can feel downtown when six dozen people line up for a bagel and out-of-towners wander through the streets like zombies. But I'll keep believing in the fundamental goodness of humanity until humanity shows me otherwise.
