South Lake

It makes me sad to write this, but we made our first summer visit to South Lake as a family on July 11-12. The ostensible purpose was to prematurely celebrate the 82nd birthday of our beloved mother/grandmother/mother-in-law (July 13), but really, any excuse for a party! Sara and Peter spent the night at our place on Friday and we drove in Saturday with Olive. Greta had to work on Saturday until mid-afternoon, so she and Lincoln drove in separately with Yeager in time for dinner. We all stuck around until about 5 p.m. on Sunday enjoying the spectacular weather. Some things I didn't get photos of: My 5-mile "progressive long run" on Saturday, during which I accomplished a 2.5-mile warm-up at a conversational pace, then three half-mile intervals that quickened each time -- from a 10:00-mile pace, to 9:50 and the last one at 9:20. Then a mile cooldown. Greta bested me on Sunday, running 8.5 miles without any specific pacing, but clocking about 10:20 on average. Also -- 3 games of cornhole against Lincoln, each won by your humble blogger. That kid's confidence does not match his skill. 😝

The gang at dinner Saturday night, expertly cooked, as always by Peter & Sara. Strip steaks and a divine peach, basil, mozz salad with a gochujang dressing. This was the dessert course, which was a maple apple pie from a local bakery.

A gorgeous sunset Saturday framed the kids and dog nicely.

Sunday afternoon, Lincoln clambered to the top of the roof to try and adjust the chimney, but to no avail. The vent on top is fused to the pipe and won't be budged without a tool.

Carey had never done a Soduku. Now she's done a couple.

Sara and Pete kayaked the entire lake Saturday before lunch! We'll never know because she won't blog about it, but I bet her shoulders hurt tomorrow!

The women are thisclose to finishing probably the hardest puzzle camp has ever seen -- a Christmas gift from Max with at least a third of it almost exclusively white. It's sadistic.

  1. Looks like fun! (Why are you sad to write it? You're not there anymore? Is July 11 a late start to the "summer vacationing at South Lake" season?)

  2. Yes. And yes. Every year summer seems to go faster and it's a shame we missed all of June. Then again, the Adirondack black flies are notorious so it's not as much fun being outside that first month of summer.
