Observations on dog ownership

Yeager the Hound, German Shepherd and Who Knows What Else, was dropped off at our house by Merisa from Ayres Animal Shelter at about 6 p.m. on Sunday. So it's been slightly less than 24 hours. But that's not going to stop me from offering my snap judgments on how the Merrills' lives have forever changed.
  • 2148 Morrow Avenue will never smell the same. It'll smell more like Grandma Vickie's.
  • The kitchen floor, while never clean in the past, will be even more never clean now. This dog's mouth drips like a leaky hose after he laps up water and he sheds. Wear shoes when you come visit.
  • We shall, effective as of this writing, begin transferring a monthly amount from the kids' college savings accounts to a Yeager Vet Fund. After being immunized against Lyme and heartworm and something unpronounceable, plus a new flea and tick collar and all his jangling registration tags, we are about $500 poorer.
  • Mommy's access to Amazon.com will be limited. We don't need a black walking harness and a reflective one and we don't need three leashes for any reason.
  • Mommy's alarm that used to go off at 630 will now go off at 6. She's the morning walker forever and ever and evah.
  • We have a garbage can in our garage dedicated to dog shit.
But truly, while I have tried my best to not accommodate this life change, there's no hiding the fact that this dog is remarkably well-behaved (so far) for a shelter dog, the kids have been smiling for 24 hours, and we did a very kind thing giving an unwanted animal a home. So send money, volunteer to dog sit, and keep reading. I'm sure I'll have more to say.
