Lincoln is getting his first real taste of homework this year and it's good for him. His teacher assigns a monthly project that the kids have, well, a month to complete. It's often cross-discipline, focusing on writing and reading comprehension and the like. December's task was to read a chapter book and create a book jacket with 10 "panels." Some of the panel instructions: Pick five adjectives to describe the main character; use a thesaurus to choose synonyms for those adjectives and write them on the inside flap of the jacket; write three paragraphs summarizing the book's beginning, middle and end; each paragraph must contain at least two compound or complex sentences; underline those sentences; pick three problems from the book and illustrate them; illustrate the solutions to those problems as well; write a one-paragraph review of the book; tell readers at least three things you liked about it and three things you did not; use "creative lettering" to draw the book's name on the spine... and that's about half of it. Anyway, I am proud to say Lincoln finished his project yesterday. He read the fifth book in "The Spiderwick Chronicles" called "The Wrath of Mulgarath." He can now enjoy his 10-day holiday vacation.
