The mostly shirtless male hockey fans of our local institution of higher learning, Union College, have not adopted the school's mascot change from Dutchmen (colonial overtones, I guess?) to the Garnet Chargers (a nod to the electrical history of GE, Schenectady's largest employer). Their hockey arena rang out with cheers of "Let's Go Dutchmen!" on Saturday as Jeff and I watched Union wallop Brown 6-0 in the first round of their conference playoffs. They're a year or two away from leaving their old barn, which is a lovely wood-beamed dome with a prominent place for their proudest achievement -- a banner celebrating 2014, when they won the men's college hockey national championship. Sadly, in the transfer portal and "Name, Image, Likeness" era of college athletics, it is unlikely to happen ever again.
